Founded in February 2005, Biopharm Analytica Limited is a spin out company which has its origins in a major research project focusing on the Russian & Newly Independent States (NIS) biopharmaceutical industry, formerly based at the The University of Birmingham. Among the major outputs from this research are: a PhD on Biotechnology in the USSR; one Master's dissertation on Some Aspects of Single Cell Protein Production in the USSR; and the first Western academic book on Russia & the NIS's emerging biotechnology industry, Technology and Transition: A Survey of Biotechnology in Russia, Ukraine and the Baltic States. As an integral component of the project, three major reports on the biopharmaceutical industry in Kazakhstan, Belarus and Uzbekistan were completed for the United Kingdom's Department of Trade & Industry. A number of papers have also been published on aspects of biotechnology regulations in Russia and the NIS, including a report on Biotechnology Legislation in Central & Eastern Europe for the European Federation of Biotechnology. Numerous scientific and technical missions were undertaken with the aim of facilitating links between UK companies and lead-edge researchers and the most significant biotech and pharmaceutical companies in the Russian Federation and NIS. A number of key reference books on Russian and NIS biotechnology have also been published including Who's Who in Russia & Republics Biotechnology and Ex-USSR Biotechnology Industry Contact Directory. A series of articles have appeared in Bio/Technology, New Scientist, International Industrial Biotechnology etc. Numerous seminars and conference reports have been delivered including presentations to the NATO Economics Colloquium and the NATO Symposium on Science in Eastern Europe. Researchers at the project also acted as consultants for a number of national and international pharmaceutical companies with an interest in exploring opportunities in Russia and the NIS.

Biopharm Analytica utilises the academic resources developed over more than a decade at the Birmingham project to provide new insight into the biopharmaceutical industries of Russia and the Newly Independent States. Utilising a wide network of academic and business contacts the company undertakes research and consultancy for international companies seeking to access the Russian pharma and biotech market.
